Flash Memory Card Readers

Flash memory card readers come in models that have different reading capabilities from one card readers to multi-card readers. The flash memory card reader is plugged into the USB port of a computer so that anything recorded on the cards can be accessed by the computer. There are also built-in memory card readers that conveniently sit at the front of desktops or the sides of laptops. There are also memory card readers in the equipment of photo developing stores so you can directly print and edit your photos directly off the card.

Flash memory card readers can also be used as external memory devices. For example if you wanted to save something off your computer you can use the memory card reader with a memory card in it to record something and take it with you. Or if you want you can transfer files from computer to computer this way, or send a bunch of files or programs to a friend through the mail.

If you have Windows XP or Vista,or a modern Mac computer, the memory card reader will be automatically detected and you can hot swap the card in and out of the reader without shutting your computer on and off. This is more convenient to use a card reader if you have several cards to read so you do not have to switch you camera on and off each time if you try to read the cards through the camera. Also if you have several cameras you should have a multi-card reader so it can read the different cards. The ultimate in convenience of course is to have a card reader built right into the computer. If you have a desktop and want to read a lot of cards, consider installing an after market card reader, they tend to be inexpensive.

I have several cameras that I use and I have three different cards to read all the time. I thus have a multi-card reader. One camera has an SD card, one a Compact Flash and one has an xD card, and I have no problems dealing with all three. It is also more convenient than looking for the cords to plug my camera into the computer as there are actually two different cord ends, a micro USB plug and a mini USB plug. Just a final tip, make sure that the reader will read all your cards before you decide to invest in a new one.
